Traineeships at the department of Radiation Oncology of the Amsterdam UMC

Amsterdam UMC-Radiotherapy, at the locations AMC and VUmc, is one of the biggest European institutions to irradiate patients with cancer. Main clinical foci of the department are image-guided adaptive radiotherapy, MRI-guided brachytherapy and advanced treatment planning based on scripting techniques and Artificial Intelligence. Moreover, we have a strong world-renowned hyperthermia group applying heat to the tumor area to boost the effect of radiotherapy.

The department is up-to-date with the most modern equipment and state of the art workflow.  A multidisciplinary team, consisting of clinicians, technicians and (research) physicists collaborate on all work activities. Furthermore, development and research is continuously conducted at several levels and disciplines, i.e. technical, physical, and clinical.

Pleasant cooperation with other departments, e.g. Anesthesiology and Radiology/Nuclear Medicine, is well established, which leads to seamless implementation of research findings to benefit patient treatments. The scientific personnel including ~20 PhD students, several senior researchers and postdocs, provides an inspiring academic working environment.

The physics group of the department of Radiation Oncology offers the possibility for scientific traineeships for bachelor and master students. We offer a variety of challenging and innovative topics. Students from various study areas are welcome to explore the possibilities. Our department acts in the technological and scientific foreground.

Are you a student in e.g. biomedical engineering, medical natural science (MNW), technical medicine, or a related study or direction in physics, mathematics or computer science? We challenge you to take the opportunity to work in the probably most rapidly evolving field in health care: radiotherapy!

The main research in our department focuses on

  • Image guided radiotherapy, using MRI (MR-linac) or Cone Beam CT guidance

  • Brachytherapy

  • Hyperthermia

On each of these topics we offer regular assignments. The assignment will be fine-tuned according to the status of the ongoing research in the department and the need, interest and expertise/level of the student.

Please react with a CV and overview of study courses (incl. results) to: prof dr Arjan Bel, head physics, technology and ICT (a.bel@amsterdamumc.nl). Depending on the topic, the traineeship will be at one of the locations AMC or VUmc, or sometimes at both locations.

Also mention the level of the traineeship (bachelor, master), the ECTS/time you would need for this traineeship and the period you are available.
